Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
