European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the new year, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts point out that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
