British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages down to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," he added. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
