A recent study reveals that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying these medications should be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
