As any prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
