In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
